Sedation dentistry is a form of dental treatment that uses medications to help patients relax during their visit to the dentist office. The medications used for sedation may vary depending on the patient’s needs and can range from mild tranquilizers to general anesthesia. Sedation dentistry can also be referred to as “sleep” or “twilight” dentistry, and it can be used in conjunction with a variety of dental procedures, from root canals to wisdom teeth extractions.

Patients who are particularly anxious about visiting the dentist, those who have sensitive gag reflexes, or those who need multiple procedures completed in one visit are all good candidates for sedation dentistry. Patients who experience significant pain due to dental procedures may also benefit from this form of treatment.

Sedatives, such as benzodiazepines and nitrous oxide, are commonly used for moderate sedation during dental visits and procedures. General anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedatives may be required in more complex cases involving multiple treatments and prolonged surgery times.

Depending on the type of medication and dosage prescribed by your doctor, you may feel relaxed, sleepy or unconscious during your procedure with some forms of sedation dentistry such as nitrous oxide or general anesthesia. However, you should not feel any pain while under the effects of these medications due to their anesthetic effects on nerve endings in your mouth and gums.

Yes, as with any medical procedure there are some risks associated with using anaesthetics such as nausea and vomiting after your procedure as well as allergic reactions to certain drugs that may be used for deep sedations such as general anaesthesia or IV sedatives . It is important for your doctor to be aware of any allergies you have prior to receiving treatment so that they can take precautions against potential reactions which could make you very ill .

Yes, depending on the type of medication used , there may be a period where you are feeling groggy or disoriented after being under anaesthetic . Your doctor will give you instructions on how best to recover after taking anaesthetics such as hydration , rest , light activities etc . In addition it is recommended that someone accompanies you home following your appointment if possible to aid in your recovery .
