Why Get Your Teeth Recontoured?

Having the perfect smile is one of the most eye-catching features a person can have. Having your teeth recontoured is an effective way to achieve this. Teeth recontouring, also known as tooth reshaping, is a simple procedure where a dentist uses their specialized tools to remove small amounts of enamel from teeth in order to improve the overall aesthetic of your smile. Here are some benefits of getting your teeth recontoured:

Increased Self-Confidence

A great smile can boost self-esteem and make it easier to make friends and feel more confident when meeting new people. Having your teeth professionally contoured can help you look and feel your best.

More Attractive Appearance

Because only small amounts of enamel need to be removed, tooth reshaping has minimal impact on how strong your teeth are. You can get a gorgeous smile without having to resort to more invasive cosmetic procedures like veneers or crowns.

Improved Oral Health

By removing any misshapen or damaged areas on the surface of teeth, recontouring helps strengthen them and protect against further damage or infection. This makes it easier for patients to keep up with a regular dental care routine.

Quick Procedure

Tooth reshaping takes just one appointment at the dentist's office and can be completed in minutes. There’s no need to take time off work or school for recovery. You'll walk away with improved results immediately!

What to Expect

When getting your teeth recontoured, you can expect the following:

  • A thorough dentist exam prior to the procedure, where an X-ray of your mouth may be taken to determine if there is any underlying issue that might interfere with your treatment.

  • The use of a special dental tool to carefully and precisely reshape your teeth for a more aesthetically pleasing look, which typically results in less time in the chair due to the improved accuracy of the process.

  • After reshaping has been completed, a fluoride gel or paste will be applied to protect the newly exposed enamel and prevent any further decay.

  • Depending on your individual requirements, additional treatments such as bonding or veneers may be recommended to enhance the appearance of slightly crooked or chipped teeth.

  • Results are usually seen immediately after treatment is complete and you should be able to return home feeling great about your new smile!

Tooth recontouring, also known as tooth reshaping or enameloplasty, is a procedure used by dentists to improve the appearance of teeth. It involves carefully removing small amounts of tooth enamel in order to adjust the shape, size and/or alignment of one or more teeth. This can be done for aesthetic purposes, such as improving a person’s smile, or to correct any irregularities that may be present in the teeth due to decay, developmental defects or trauma.

The dentist will first examine the patient’s mouth and take diagnostic images (X-rays and/or photos) to help plan the procedure. During the procedure itself, the dentist will use a specialized hand piece with a diamond burr or other lightly abrasive tool to carefully polish away very small amounts of tooth enamel from targeted areas on each tooth. Usually, no anesthesia is necessary and most procedures are completed within 30 to 45 minutes.

Tooth recontouring can address various issues related to shape, size and alignment of the teeth including chips and scratches on the surface of the teeth; minor overlaps between two front teeth; overly high cusps; and slight irregularities in bite alignment caused by crowding or disproportionally sized teeth. It cannot however address severe misalignment issues which may require orthodontic treatment or more complex restorative techniques such as crowns or veneers.

No, this procedure involves gently reducing specific areas of your tooth or teeth so there should be no discomfort felt during the procedure itself. Afterwards there may be some sensitivity but this usually does not happen.

As long as it is performed correctly by an experienced dentist, there is minimal risk involved with this procedure since only minute amounts of enamel are removed from each tooth being adjusted. That said, over-contouring (removing too much enamel) can lead to permanent damage such as sensitivity and a weakened overall structure so it’s important that you choose an experienced professional who specializes in cosmetic dentistry for best results.

The results from dental contouring are permanent. If, however you grind your teeth at night then you may experience breakage sooner than expected due to excessive pressure placed on them during sleep. In this case, speak with your dentist about getting fitted for a custom nightguard appliance which can help protect your newly shaped teeth.

Unfortunately, most common dental insurances do not offer coverage for cosmetic procedures like dental contouring since they are considered elective treatments. However, if there is an underlying medical reason for needing it then you may want to speak with your insurance provider about potential coverage options for certain cases depending upon their policy guidelines.
